A longstanding joint venture between two of the state’s top contractors secured the early works contract for engineering and design services of Atlantic Shores Project 1. The undertaking is the state’s first offshore wind project.
Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind announced Wednesday it selected Creamer-Jingoli to engineer and design the full onshore underground cable route for the project. Hackensack-based J. Fletcher Creamer & Son Inc. and Jingoli of Lawrenceville comprise the joint venture. The two industry leaders have more than a century of experience delivering major infrastructure projects across the region.
As NJBIZ has reported, following the Ørsted mess last fall and despite broader sector challenges as well as local opposition and litigation from activists and Republican lawmakers, Atlantic Shores Project 1 remains on track.
In March, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) initiated its environmental review of the project.
At its closest point, the lease area is 8.4 miles from the New Jersey coast. It sits between Atlantic City and Barnegat Light. The project is a 50-50 partnership between Shell New Energies US LLC and EDF Renewables North America. According to projections, it will generate 1,510 megawatts of offshore wind energy — enough to power more than 700,000 homes. Additionally, the project expects to create $1.9 billion in economic activity and thousands of jobs.
The work
This portion of work includes detailed design for the 12 miles of underground infrastructure running from the project’s landfall in Atlantic City to the point of interconnection in Egg Harbor Township.
The scope of Creamer-Jingoli’s involvement will include
- Supporting field surveys;
- Environmental sampling;
- Robust subsurface utility engineering work; and
- Site preparation for the duct bank installations that will house cables connecting offshore wind power to New Jersey’s electric grid.
“Partnering with industry leader who have proven experience in the local market is critical to establishing a thriving domestic offshore wind industry anchored in New Jersey,” said Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind CEO Joris Veldhoven in a press release announcing the contract award. “Atlantic Shores is thrilled to work with Creamer-Jingoli to continue creating great-paying Garden State jobs through critical near-term investments in New Jersey.”
“Creamer-Jingoli is proud to have been selected by Atlantic Shores to help bring NJ’s first offshore wind project to life,” said Martin Downs, president, Creamer. “As a New Jersey-based union company, Creamer-Jingoli prides itself in the value that its work brings to the local communities. Atlantic Shores has expressed that same sentiment since our initial dealings with them; we are excited for what this partnership means for our state.”
Jingoli CEO Joseph Jingoli Jr. said that offshore wind will have a lasting impact on our communities.
“Simultaneously creating good-paying jobs while fighting climate change and supporting the transition to sustainable, green energy,” said Jingoli. “We’re honored to be selected by Atlantic Shores to support the development of this critical clean energy project for New Jersey.”
